"The ideas kept coming in, so then we thought, why can't we do them all?" Valade said.
One month after she died, Spicer's students, colleagues, friends and family members gathered Friday under a blazing sun to dedicate the school's south courtyard in her honor.
The memorials won't end there. A watercolor painting of Spicer, painted by one teacher's wife, has been placed in the school library, and an honorary plaque will soon join it.

They proposed a memorial bench and a scholarship in her name, among other dedications. Several teachers brought up the idea of dedicating the courtyard.
"She was very brightening. If you came in feeling less than your best, she would make you feel better," said Samantha Stokes, a sixth grade student who wrote and Ghd Register played a piece of music in Spicer's honor.
"This is perfect. She loved the spring, she loved being outside," Spicer's husband, Tom, said of the garden. "This is her."
Spicer, a popular math and language arts teacher, died in late March after a four month battle with cancer.
Administrators promptly designed the bench, inscribed with Spicer's name, and a group of teachers, led by science teacher John Lysik, set to work preparing the courtyard.
"To all who enter this courtyard, may they remember her, and may it fill you with the joy of reading and learning."

"It was great to be out here working on it," said Hanzla Sheikh, an eighth grader who worked on the project every day. "It made me feel closer to Mrs. Spicer."

Although the teacher is gone, Friday was no exception for the students.

In the weeks after Spicer's death, teachers and administrators considered a number of ways to honor their fallen colleague.
The revamped courtyard includes three new side gardens, as well as the memorial bench bearing Spicer's name. It will be open to students, teachers and other members of the school community to sit, read and think of Spicer.
