The story goes that Richard Blechynden, India Tea Commissioner and director of the East Indian Pavilion at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, had brewed up samples of his teas to distribute to thirsty fair goers.
While Blechynden obviously cannot be credited with the invention of iced tea, he and his fellow tea sellers at the 1904 World's Fair deserve kudos for bringing iced tea out of the kitchen and into the commercial market.
A decade later, the American public was investing in glassware and utensils specially designed for iced tea consumption. Prohibition in the 1920s and early '30s further cemented iced tea's status as one of America's favorite beverages.
Iced tea was even sold at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, where iced tea and lemonade sales earned one enterprising vendor more than $2,000.
